Please check out the requirements of what it takes to be a musician in the Blue Man Band.

Phase One: The Audition

Step One: Initial Audition
I. If you come to an audition, you will find yourself in a room with a drum kit, guitar and bass. The Music Directors play a short version of a song from the show, then you’ll be asked to play it back. There is no need to read music. Although many of our current musicians are classically trained, some of the best musicians in our company can’t read a note. While you’re playing the song, our hope is that you’ll exhibit the ability to play with feeling, intuition and skill. If you do, you’ll move onto the next step.
II. In the next step we study your physical characterisistics while playing. We’ll be watching to see if drummers can keep their feet together, how guitar and bass players handle their instrument. Is it with power? Grace? A little bit of both? We will be looking at good timing and the ability to intonate well on the Zither or Chapman Stick.

Step Two: Callbacks
If you’ve made it past the initial audition, we’ll put you in an environment where you get to play with more musicians. Here’s where your instrumental skill level is more acutely tested. It takes talent to be a drummer and play with another drummer. In string players, we’re looking for the openness to grasp a new instrument played in a new way.
